Due to its origin greywater naturally contain high levels of nutrients. These nutrients originate from the soaps, shampoos, and laundry detergents that are used while cleaning. Greywater bio-digestion.

If it is required that greywater is stored, or if the greywater is to be used in a drip irrigation system, or reused for washing laundry and cars then it is essential that the greywater undergoes a treatment process. This treatment process is called bio-digestion.

The bio-digestion of greywater requires the nutrients in the water to be absorbed and the pathogens filtered out.  This is done by making use of the pathogens natural tendency to feed and consume the nutrients in the water. Because anaerobic pathogen tend to produce malodours, oxygen is bubbles through the water, killing the anaerobic germs, leaving only the aerobic pathogens to digest the nutrients.
